Is there still a $200 tax stamp on suppressors?
No. Since January 1, 2026, the federal NFA tax on suppressors, short-barreled rifles (SBRs), short-barreled shotguns (SBSs) and AOWs is $0. The $200 tax still applies to machine guns and destructive devices. ATF approval on Form 4 is still required before you can take the item home.
Who can buy a suppressor or other NFA item?
You must be 21 or older, a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident, and pass the federal background check. You also have to comply with federal, state and local law, and the item must be legal in your state of residence.
How long does ATF approval take?
It varies, which is why we show ATF's own average processing times on this page. Applications filed electronically through ATF eForms are much faster than paper: most eForm 4 approvals now arrive in days, not months, while paper filings take months.
Should I buy as an individual or through a gun trust?
Individual ownership is the simpler application, but only the registered owner can possess the item and it requires probate upon death. A trust lets multiple trustees legally possess the item, makes succession planning easier and puts the trust's name on the paperwork instead of yours. It's more setup, and we help with trust creation, trustee changes and compliance.
What do I need for the Form 4?
Fingerprints (FD-258 cards) and passport-style 2”×2” photos for every responsible person, the item's serial number and manufacturer information, Chief Law Enforcement Officer (CLEO) notification, and a copy of your trust documents if you're buying through a trust. We file it electronically through ATF eForms.
Can I take my suppressor home while ATF reviews my application?
No. There is no interim possession during processing. The item stays with us until ATF issues your approved Form 4, then you schedule a pickup appointment, complete the final transfer paperwork and take it home.
What happens if my application is denied?
The purchased item is non-refundable if your application is denied. It becomes a consignment item, subject to commission fees and storage.
